If you want to ride a motorcycle in Texas, the first step is completing a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course. The MSF is the national standard for motorcycle training in the United States, and Texas requires new riders to complete an approved course before adding a motorcycle endorsement to their driver’s license.

MSF courses are designed for beginners and include both classroom instruction (most offered online) and hands on riding practice. Students learn essential skills such as throttle control, braking, turning, obstacle avoidance, and safe riding strategies. Training motorcycles and professional instructors are provided, so no prior riding experience is required.
Once you successfully complete the course, you receive a completion certificate that allows you to apply for your Texas motorcycle license.
MSF Basic Rider Courses require students to wear basic protective gear during the riding portion of the class. While it does not need to be dedicated motorcycle gear, you must wear clothing that provides reasonable protection.
Most schools require:
Many training programs provide helmets if you do not have one yet, but it is always best to confirm with the school ahead of time. Make sure to confirm the specific gear requirements of your school as well.

While specialized motorcycle gear is not required for the course, we strongly recommend investing in proper riding gear before you begin riding on public roads. Motorcycle specific jackets, gloves, helmets, and boots are designed to provide significantly better protection in the event of a fall.

After completing your MSF Basic Rider Course, you will receive a completion certificate that allows you to add a Class M motorcycle endorsement to your Texas driver’s license. The certificate is valid for two years. Bring your certificate and current driver’s license to a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office to update your license.
Most DPS offices recommend scheduling an appointment in advance, but you may be able to get a same-day opening if you visit and ask about cancellations.
